If you want to become an IAS officer, you can become by giving CSE exam which is Civil Service Exam which is conducted by UPSE which means Union Public Service Commission. Civil Service Exam comprises of 24 government jobs like IAS, IFS, IPS, IRS and etc.
WHAT IS WORK OF IAS OFFICER ?
Now, the question arises what is work of IAS officer. The answer is the DMs, commissioner, deputy commissioner, secretary of prime minister are IAS officers.
AGE CRITERIA :
for General castes category, the upper age limit is 32 years. For Other Backward Castes (OBC), the upper age limit is 35 years. For Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST), the upper age limit is 37 years. For physically disabled candidates (Blind, Deaf, orthopedic), the upper age limit is 42 years. The lower age limit for all category is 21 years.
QUALIFICATION :
The best part for this job is that it is not required to be a ranker in college. It does not matter you are studied from IIT or IIM. The things which matter here is you should be graduated. Either you have B.A. , medical, engineering degree or any degree. Only thing required here is you should have any degree. Don't think that only toppers can crack CSE exams. Those who are in final year of their graduation can apply for this exam. For IAS and IPS, a candidate must be a citizen of India rather than other 22 services.
NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS :
For General candidates, the maximum number of attempts is 6. For OBC candidates, the maximum number of attempts is 9 and for SC and ST candidates there is no limits.
Note: Remember, by filling form attempt is not counted, it only counted when you are present in prelims exam.
CHANCES OF SELECTION :
In Civil Service Exam, there is 0.21 percent chances of selection. In 2017, 11 lakh 37 thousand people filled the form and 5 lakh people were present to give prelims exam. Over 15 thousand 445 people were qualified. From 15,445 people 2,955 candidates were gone for interview and 1,099 were selected. So, chances are less but just think about that one seat of selected person. If you think more about the competition you will be demotivated and have a huge burden on your mind.
COURSE PATTERN :
First you have to appear and qualify for preliminary exam, then main exam and the last for interview. The aim for preliminary exam is to qualify for the main exam. At the time of main exam, the question are tougher than preliminary exam. After passing mains exam, candidates are qualified for interview. Interview stage is very tougher because the lack of confidence in candidates.
SYLLABUS AND PAPER PATTERN :
In preliminary exam, there are two papers. The first one is general studies and the second one is CSAT (which is Civil Services Aptitude Test). In both paper 1 and paper 2, the given time is 2 hours. Both contain 200 marks but the questions are very different from each other as paper 1 contains 100 questions and paper 2 contains 80 questions. You can give exam in Hindi or English language.
Paper-1 contains the following topic based questions:
Current events of national and international importance ;
History of India and Indian national movement;
Indian and world geography;
Indian polity and governance constitution, political system, Right issues, etc. ;
Economic and social development, social sector initiatives, etc. :
General science ;
General issues on environment ecology, bio diversity and climate change and etc. .
Paper-2 contains following topic based questions:
Comprehension;
Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
Logical reasoning and analytical ability;
Decision making and problem solving;
Basic numeracy, data interpretation.
Both papers also have many differences like paper 2 is only qualifying means you have to score 66 from 200 marks. While, the first paper increases your merit. All questions are MCQ type and attempting both the papers are compulsory. The preliminary exam is only for qualifying to reach mains exam.
Now, we are going to talk about main exam. There are total 9 papers. The total marks are 1750. We are going to talk about these 9 papers line by line.
Paper-1 : It consists of writing essay. It contains 250 marks.
Paper-2 : It consists of general studies - 1 which is Indian heritage and culture, history and geography of the world. It contains 250 marks.
Paper-3 : It is about general studies - 2 ( governance, constitution, social justice and international relations). It also contains 250 marks.
Paper-4 : General studies - 3 which is about technology, economic development, biodiversity, Environment and security which covers 250 marks.
Paper-5 : General studies - 4 which is about Ethics, integrity and aptitude which covers 250 marks.
Paper-6 : It consists of subject of your opinion and it is paper-1 and covers 250 marks.
Paper-7 : It covers paper-2 from your optional subject and has 250 marks.
Other than these seven papers you have to give two qualifying papers :
Paper-A : It is about your selected language from Indian language.
Paper-B : It is about english language.
Both consists of 300 marks and you should gain atleast 33% marks.

In 2016, total 1099 candidates were selection. In 1099 candidates, 500 candidates were belonging to General caste, 347 from OBC, 163 from SC and 89 from ST.

STRATEGY FOR PREPARATION :
First of all, know about all information about the subject. You should also cover the entire syllabus thoroughly and know about other toppers strategy.
